VIETNAM CONTAINER PORTS WITH COMING GLOBAL MEGA SHIP DEMAND

Early in Mar 2023, there was a new giant container ship – MSC Tessa set sail to join the new mega-ship family of over 24,000 teus capacity or nearly 400m LOA. There have been some deliveries since the last 5 years when the cargo demand has risen up quickly, especially during the Covid-19. The demand forecast and benefit of the rocket freight rising led to many mega-ship orders by major container carriers like MSC, Maersk, Huyndai, Evergreen, Cosco, and others.

We can name 8 more others in operation:
Ship #1 The Ever Ace with a capacity of 23,992 TEU. Her maiden voyage was in July 2021. There are two other ships that are the same length as the Ever Ace, at 400m long (1,300ft).

Ship #2 HMM Algeciras
The HMM Algeciras is the first of twelve vessels with a large capacity of 23,964 TEUs, just 28 containers less than the Ever Ace.

Ship #3 HMM Oslo
This ship runs a very close third to her sister ship, the HMM Algeciras. She set sail in 2020 on the 11th of May. HMM Oslo is 399.9 meters long and 61.50 meters wide with a carrying capacity of 23,756 TEU, 172 TEU less than the HMM Algeciras.

Ship #4 MSC Gulsun is launched in 2019, almost 62 meters wide and 400 meters long, with a carrying capacity of 23,756 TEU. She was one of the first vessels able to transport 24 container rows side-by-side.

Ship #5 MSC Mina, a sister of the MSC Gulsun, has a carrying capacity of 23,656 TEU. The MSC Mina is 400 meters in length and 61 meters wide, delivered to the Mediterranean Shipping Company on the 18th of July 2019.

Ship #6 CMA CGM Jacques Saadé entered operation on the 23rd of September, 2020. She is the first of 9 sister ships that will be the biggest vessels powered by LPG-Liquefied natural gas. She has a carrying capacity of 23,000 TEU, is 400 meters long, 61 meters wide, and 78 meters high.

Ship #7 OOCL Hong Kong was delivered in 2017. Her capacity is 21,413 TEU with a length of 399.87 meters and a girth of 58.8 meters.

Ship #8 COSCO Shipping Universe was the first in a line of 6 vessels of the Universe Class (Universe, Nebula, Galaxy, Solar, Star, and Planet). She has a massive capacity of 21,237 TEU, 400 meters long and 58.6 wide.

Ship #9 CMA CGM Antoine De Saint Exupery was launched in 2017. She is 400 meters long and 59 meters wide, with a capacity of 20,954 TEU.

Ship #10 Madrid Maersk had an official capacity of “only” 19,630 TEU. However, Maersk Line modified the design and broke the 20,658 TEU.

When will Vietnam accommodate those types of vessels at our ports? In Cai Mep – Thi Vai, one of Vietnam’s deep water areas, many terminals were first designed (2006) with berth lengths of 300m/each for vessels with LOA of about 250m (or 62.5% of the current 400m vessel designed or berth length about 500m). There is so quick change in 17 years.

Can we expect new terminals in Can Gio (HCM City) or Baria Vung tau in the coming years to meet the demand? We hope the Vietnamese authorities, carriers, and investors will carefully study and catch the changing demand.
