THE RANKINGS AMONG SHIPPING LINES ARE TO BE CHANGED SOON
After the pandemic, the competitions among shipping lines become more severe and their ranks are changing to their strategic plan of development as well as the market share, they are secured from the customers, especially in container transportation.
In 2021, the first position was changed from Maersk to MSC after Maersk was keeping 25 years. MSC has purchased 306 containerships, with a capacity of 1.2m TEUs, since August 2020 and, with its newbuild deliveries, will reach a fleet capacity of 5m TEUs in May 2023 to keep its largest position in container shipping lines.
This year, 2023, Maersk may leave their second position to CMA-CGM, a French giant carrier when their new building orders jump from 0.91mTEUs to 1.15 million TEUs to add to their current fleet of 621 vessels, with a capacity of 3.5m TEUs.
In the coming years, we would see more orders of big ships of various sizes, especially from Chinese shipyards. The ranks of giant carriers may soonly be realized and the gap in capacity is being widened.
