CAN VIETNAM COFFEE EXPORTERS FIND OUT A NEW PATH TO IMPROVE VALUE FOR EXPORT?
Vietnam is one of the biggest global exporters of coffee, mainly Robusta, and reached 4 billion USD in export revenue. However, with about 710,000 ha of coffee plants but only 650,000 ha harvestable with prices and quality are very humble. Why?
In the recent seminar on “Vietnam Coffee Appreciation” hosted by Labor News, there were several interesting and valuable opinions regarding the reasons and suggestions to improve.
– Need to improve value-chain cooperation from farming to final products: currently, we lack a clear geographical guide of production, original tracking, food hygiene, and deep production of high-quality products.
– Need lower loan rates from banks and other financial funds: currently, farmers and enterprises have to loan with interest rates up to 12% annually which are too high in fluctuating agricultural difficulties including weather conditions, finance, and outcome buyers.
– Need “clean coffee” for markets with stricter quality control measures: origins of materials, seeds, fertilizer used, clear geographical growth, manufacturers, and high-quality products.
– Need more acknowledgment of farmers, enterprises, and manufacturers’ scope of production and mutual cooperation for clean and good products to have better prices in long term.
– Need to care about the taste of users. Vietnamese are usually using Robusta with a strong, bitter taste but other people like Western ones prefer light, good smell Arabica coffee. Should we adjust the production of these two main types or mix them in the final products?
– Last but not least is marketing in branding in the market of users, in their good emotion when using our products
With the advantages of the shortage of Arabica’s biggest exporter Brazil recently, Vietnamese coffee could have a chance to be more successful in the global market for both quality and stable quantity.
