GLOBAL SHIPPING TO BE RE-ORDERED AGAIN SOON
The cooperation between the two giant players in container transportation will be broken after 10 years in join hands. Since Maersk and MSC joined in 2015, the competition in the market was huge pushing other carriers to stay together to survive forming the 3 major big alliances today – 2M, THEA, Ocean, and some smaller carriers joining back and forth in either group.
With the joint statement, Vincent Clerc, new CEO of A. P. Moller-Maersk, and Soren Toft, CEO of MSC, said: “MSC and Maersk recognize that much has changed since the two of them. The company signed a 10-year agreement in 2015. Closing the 2M Alliance will pave the way for both companies to continue pursuing their own strategies. We greatly appreciate the partnership and look forward to continuing our strong partnership throughout the remainder of the agreement term. We remain fully committed to providing 2M alliance services to MSC and Maersk customers.”
Now, either MSC or Maersk will start to think differently to secure their business, competing with each other for those customers who are using containers in the same services as 2M now. Which carrier wins the choice of these customers and how? And the action from either carrier will impact other alliances and individual carriers in the markets to secure and win customers too.
There could lead to a new war of competition and a new order in the shipping industry will be set up again, at least in container transportation in the next few years. We, Voltrans Logistics, think that there will be some collapse and some new setups.
