EFFORTS OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY TO REDUCE PORT CONGESTION HOPE TO WORK

With the new announcement from Port Authority on Aug 2nd, the two ports on US East Coast will implement a new container imbalance fee for ocean carriers, effective from 1st Sep 2022, as a part of their efforts to release the burden of port congestion by the peak cargo season and a cargo shift from the West Coast.

The new fee targets the excess empty containers being stored in the port long time. With this fee, port authorities hope that carriers will reduce gradually their stock at the port to re-gain capacity for new cargo load/discharge. This initiative from the port authority is for the preparation for the coming traditional busiest annual period of the US holiday shopping season. This approach is also an example of these ports’ ability to identify and implement solutions to preventing logjams from happening.

With this new fee, these ports will hope the better performance this year against the bad experience of last year in the pandemic. We, Voltrans Logistics, would hope this action is a good tool to release the burden to our customers in the US and Vietnam with smooth trading during the peak shopping time of the year.
