CHANCE FOR VIETNAM TO DEVELOP AS A BIG COUNTRY EXPORTING SEMICONDUCTOR CHIPS
In the circumstance that China is in difficulty developing semiconductor chips by many barriers from the US. Other countries are taking the chance to improve the production of semiconductors at advanced levels, including Vietnam.
For the worry of national and international security, it is essential that this technology be controlled. Vietnam is considered a safer investment country with fewer threats and more security compared with other places. Over the years many big companies have invested in manufacturing semiconductor chips in Vietnam such as Intel, Samsung, and Synopsys. For example, IPV, Intel’s chip factory in Vietnam, achieved an export revenue of $11.5 billion in 2022. Meanwhile, the self-manufacturing of chips in Vietnam has also started to progress. In mid-April, FPT announced the design and production of three source chip lines and signed the first chip supply contract for a partner with a scale of 25 million chips, expected to be exported in 2024-2025. Previously, in August 2022, Viettel proposed to participate in research and production of chips to serve domestic demand and towards export.
Experts say that Vietnam can become the world’s chip production center if it uses favorable factors well and has appropriate strategies, incentive policies, and great incentives for this field. At the beginning of April, at the regular Government meeting, the Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to complete the National Innovation Center, and at the same time develop a program on chip production.
According to a report on Vietnam’s ICT technology sector published by the Ministry of Information and Communications in early May 2023, Vietnam ranks third in terms of semiconductor chip export sales to the US, after Malaysia and Taiwan. Vietnam is also among the leaders in increasing chip exports to the US, alongside Thailand, India, and Cambodia.
We, Voltrans Logistics, firmly believe that Vietnam’s production of semiconductor chips will be developed stronger by Vietnamese companies’ and foreign partners’ efforts. We also hope the government will continue supporting these efforts with more suitable policies.
