BE AWARE AND PREPARED WELL AGAINST DROUGHT AT PANAMA CANAL.
In the second week of Aug 2023, the situation of the Panama Canal just shews a bit better, with fewer vessels queuing at both ends of the canal due to the severe drought this year that limited vessels’ passage thru the canal. Some of these vessels’ Vietnam export/import shipments have been on hold in the queue at both ends.
We mentioned the situation in another article regarding world climate change with El Nino or El Nina a few weeks ago. The weather change has caused maritime transportation side effects. In that article, we also named Panama Canal as an example.
The situation of heavy congestion over there seems not easily be solved in a short time, then some carriers (bulkers, tankers, and containers) are planning to divert to other routes, even taking longer distances of travel. From experience, the water draft at the Panama Canal could be lower in October or November, and then the situation will worsen.
