HOCHIMINH CITY LOOKS FORWARD HIGHER RANKING IN GLOBAL MARITIME PORT OPERATION

On 12th May, the Hochiminh City People committee hosted a seminar for a study of building an international transshipment port in Can Gio. Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong – Vice Chairman led the seminar with Mr Chan Quang Lam – Director of HCMC Department of Transport. The seminar was attended by many experts from major consultant companies in maritime like Portcoast, CMB, associations like Truck, VPA, VLA, Visaba, Bridge, and Road, and of course, major city departments of investment, environment, etc. Many aspects have been delivered for open discussion regarding this mega project with the majority of ideas supported to the set up of the port as soon as possible to make over 20 years of waiting for the dream to be real.

With the new project to be considered set up, the rank of HCMC port will be soon lifted up sharply from 21st position in the most recent report of Alphaliner – a reputation maritime research organization for 30 top-ranking ports in volume performance in 2022. HCM City port has been considered one of the most important ports in the global supply chain. According to the statistics of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, in 2022, the volume of goods passing through the seaport of Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City reached 8.11 million Teus. While in 2021 and 2020, the cargo volume is 7.96 million Teus and 7.86 million Teus, respectively. The growth rate is about 1.2%.

We hope that with the presence of the new mega port in Can Gio for 16-million-TEUs capacity, if approved, Vietnam port ranking will catch up to the top 10 soon.
